Does anybody know what is the total bandwidth (in bits/sec) of the DTN satellite link for
transmitting all trading data, e.g. trades/quotes for all equities, options, futures, indexes, forex, etc?? That is all trading data less anything like weather info not directly related to trading.

Just to clarify, I meant to say the maximum bandwidth and not what is actually transmitted which may depend on a given day or given instance.

FWIW: The DTN receiver has an Ethernet, USB and serial connection - I run the serial connection at 460kb to get the information for a full subscription running in a 'send all' mode. The elimination of the stock options has freed up some bandwidth. I do not know the actual BW or peak rates but I do know if run less than 460kb on the serial link there is packet loss.(1) The bad part is you do not know this is happening because if the queue is full they get discarded receiver side - this shows particularly in getting the morning opens on stocks in the morning. For serial com you need to have a UART with a large buffer (128) to handle the rate so that the UART doesn't overflow. I have not played with USB or the Ethernet but I suspect Ethernet tcp/ip is the way to go especially for a Windows program. For it the connection BW will not be an issue, only the quickness of processing client side.

(1) note: based on empirical observation.

Your 460kb (I assume Kbits/sec) is the speed you saw on your connection between DTN Receiver and your PC. I was asking about the satellite link (between DTN Transmitter in Nebraska to a satellite and down to your DTN Receiver) where DTN uses totally different format using compressing (the data on your serial link is decompressed and in different format). Secondly, DTN sends *ALL* its DTN RT trading data through its satellite link, and your serial link had only the data you subscribed to. Also, I asked about the maximum capacity of the link and not what you could see at any particular moment.

Chris, I don't have the exact numbers with me, but it is close the 1mb. This number is somewhat deceptive and I can't really give you a true "only data" bandwidth number however. DTN transmits data over multiple satellite channels which each have a set amount of bandwidth and certain data sets. We then prioritize data on each channel with "virtual channels". Quote data gets the highest priority, so in reality, it could use 100% of the available bandwidth if needed. Hopefully this is what you were looking for.
